TSMC says it will build first Japan chip plant with Sony

Taiwanese chip group aims to begin mass production by 2024

TAIPEI -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is to start producing chips in Japan by 2024 in a joint venture with Sony after the two companies signed a deal for a $7 billion plant on Tuesday.

TSMC's board of directors the same day officially approved plans to build the chip factory, its first-ever Japanese plant, in Kumamoto Prefecture.
